Integrity is what remains when no audience is present to reward the appearance of virtue. It is the refusal to become multiple people for the sake of convenience: one in public, another in appetite, another in speech, another in secret.
A divided self can still be impressive. It can speak well, signal well, and manage reputation skillfully. But where conduct and conviction keep drifting apart, something essential has already begun to fracture.
Mussar Insight
Mussar seeks wholeness of person because fragmentation makes moral life theatrical. Integrity does not mean never failing. It means that failure is not organized into a second identity with its own permissions.
