Civilization depends on language. It is through speech that we teach, comfort, negotiate, confess, and repair. It is also through speech that we exaggerate, wound, manipulate, flatter, expose, and diminish.
People often imagine harmful speech as something dramatic. More often it is ordinary: a casual rumor, a sharpened joke, a truthful statement offered without necessity, a story told for pleasure at someone else’s expense.
Mussar Insight
Mussar places unusual seriousness on speech because words travel beyond intention. A sentence can remain in another person’s mind long after the speaker has forgotten it. Restraint in speech is not emptiness. It is ethical discipline.
